Thank you for your interest in Stone Canoe! If you are a City of Syracuse High School student submitting work to be considered for the Rosamond Gifford Awards, use the form below to submit your work no later than September 30, 2010. For all other submissions, the submission period for the fifth edition is now over. Please come back in March 2011 to submit for the sixth issue.

Stone Canoe
considers for inclusion previously unpublished works of short fiction or nonfiction, short plays, poems, and works of visual art. Submissions for the spring 2011 edition, Stone Canoe No. 5 , were welcome between March 1 and July 31, 2010. We cannot consider work submitted outside these dates. The editors' decisions will be communicated by September 15, 2010. We anticipate submissions for Stone Canoe No. 6 will be accepted beginning March 1, 2011.

Submission Rules per Genre:
Drama: one piece not to exceed 10,000 words (include word count).
Fiction:
one piece not to exceed 10,000 words (include word count).
Nonfiction: one piece not to exceed 10,000 words (include word count).
Poetry: up to five poems. Please indicate all stanza breaks in case the text runs over a single page in length. Please submit at least three poems to be considered for the Bea Gonzalez Award for Poetry.
Visual art: up to five images. In the Comments area include year completed, materials used (e.g., oil on canvas, acrylic on hardwood panel), and dimensions (WxH and units - inches, feet, etc.). Dimensions are not required for photographs if the size is variable. Please submit at least three works to be considered for the Hedy and Michael Fawcett Prize for Visual Arts.
* There is no limit to the number of genres in which you may submit work. Please submit your first genre through the submission form per the instructions below. Once you have completed your first genre submissions, contact Allison Vincent at stonecanoe@syr.edu for simple instructions on how to submit in any additional genres.
** If more pieces are submitted in any one genre than the maximum stated here, Stone Canoe editors reserve the right to review only the maximum number specified.

Submissions will not be reviewed unless accompanied by a short biography of up to 60 words.

Stone Canoe is a community project committed to showcasing the work of artists and writers from, or somehow connected to, the Upstate New York region. Please include your connection to this region in your short biography. Note: The artist / writer must have a connection to Upstate New York, but the piece(s) submitted can be about anything you like. They do not need to involve New York. Also please indicate if your work has been submitted simultaneously to another publication.

There is no fee to submit work to Stone Canoe. All contributors who fit the criteria are automatically considered for the Stone Canoe Annual Awards - no additional application or fee is required.

To submit your work:

  • fill out our submission form online during the period specified and attach an electronic copy of your work.
  • Writers should submit work in either Rich Text Format (rtf) or as a Word® document.
  • Visual artists may attach low resolution (72 dpi) tif, gif or jpg images. If accepted for publication, high resolution images will be needed.

All rights for individual works revert to contributors upon publication, though Stone Canoe will seek permission to feature submitted work on its web site.

Contributors receive two copies of each issue in which their work appears and are featured on our web site.
